Phillips, who had been playing as a substitute fielder, sustained the injury during Gujarat’s commanding seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier this month. After assessing the injury, it was decided that Phillips would return to New Zealand to focus on his recovery and rehabilitation.
In light of Phillips’ absence, Gujarat Titans have turned to Shanaka, a highly capable all-rounder known for his dynamic performances with both bat and ball. Shanaka’s addition to the squad is seen as a timely reinforcement, as the team aims to strengthen its balance and cover the loss of the experienced Phillips.
Currently, Gujarat Titans are placed second in the IPL standings, with eight points from six matches, showcasing solid form so far in the tournament. Their next challenge will be against the league leaders, Delhi Capitals, in a crucial encounter scheduled for Saturday. This match could be pivotal in determining Gujarat’s position as they look to continue their momentum and push towards the top of the table.
