Supermoon, harvest moon, eclipse: Everything to know about September’s special full moon

Must read

The September 2024 supermoon will coincide with the lunar eclipse. This is the second supermoon of the year, following August’s. It is also called the Harvest Moon because its moonlight allows farmers to finish harvest before fall frost arrives.

When is the September 2024 lunar eclipse?

We will be able to see the partial lunar eclipse on September 17. It will start at 8:41 PM; by 10:45, we will see the maximum darkness. As this is a partial lunar eclipse, this will be less dramatic than a complete lunar eclipse. By 12:47 AM, the moon will return to full illumination.

What is Supermoon and who gave this name?

When the moon is in its orbit closest to the earth, it appears as a big moon called a supermoon. In 1979, Astrologer Richard Nolle first used the term “Supermoon”.

Supermoons always appear consecutively, the third supermoon is on Oct 17 and the fourth is on November 15. They appear 3-4 times in a year.

How to view a supermoon?

At this time the moon appears 7% larger because it is present at the closest location on the Earth. You can see the difference with your naked eyes as well.
