Court Approved South Korean President Yoon’s Arrest

On Tuesday, a South Korean court approved South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol’s Arrest into his martial law decree. A few days back impeached South Korean president implemented martial law in the whole country which saw huge resistance from the citizens and he had to apologize to the public after taking his decision back within a few hours.

After this incident, President Yoon was impeached and faced corruption charges and on Tuesday, court has ordered to detain Yoon. This is the first time in the history of South Korea that a sitting president is going to be arrested by Corruption Investigation Officers, this is viable until January 6 2025 and investigators will have only 24 hours to hold Yoon once he will be arrested.

Corruption charges are a few of those charges from which the South Korean President don’t have immunity. But President Yoon’s lawyer Yoon Kab-Keun has opposed the court order and said the arrest warrant is illegal.

On 14 December 2024, President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached by the National Assembly and Prime Minister Han Duck-Soo became the acting President of South Korea but he was also impeached by the parliament as the opposition had a majority there and the Finance Minister became the Choi Sang-mok becomes the new acting president of South Korea.

The current acting president Choi Sang-mok is the one who is handling the Jeju Airline Disaster which took 179 lives on South Korean soil.
